Ayodhya, town, south-central Uttar Pradesh state, northern India, on the Ghaghara River just east of Faizabad. Ayodhya is a regularly formed derivation of the Sanskrit verb yudh, "to fight, to wage war". This place holds special significance in Hinduism as it is known to be the birthplace of the God-king Ram.
